Behaviour change workshops

Throughout July we ran a series of small, expert behaviour change workshops looking at home energy efficiency, recycling and domestic water use. We looked at how behavioural theory can help us improve the design and uptake of some of the new government's flagship initiatives in these areas.

Attended by a mixture of policy experts and behaviour change experts, the focus of the workshops was on how we can use insights from behavioural economics and behaviour change research to develop policy ideas that have a maximim chance of working.

The three seminars were as follows:

  • Motivating people to recycle, 4th July 2010. How can we raise recycling rates to levels seen in other EU countries? Is Recycle Bank, where people get vouchers for recycling, a viable answer?
  • Pay As You Save (PAYS) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), 8th July 2010. How can these policies, the first of which is to be included in this Autumn's energy bill, be designed so that they work?
  • Water use, 28th July 2010. With water coming under increasing scrutiny, how can policy in this area best develop. What lessons can the water sector can learn from the energy sector?
