Chuka Umunna MP, shadow secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, will examine this development potential and the trade opportunities for the UK. Following his remarks, he will be joined in a panel debate by:
His Excellency Williams Nkurunziza, Rwandan High Commissioner to the UK
Rolake Akinkugbe, head of energy research for Ecobank
Stefan Dercon, chief economist, Department for International Development
Simon Bransfield-Garth, chief executive, Azuri technologies

chaired by:

Laura Taylor, head of advocacy, Christian Aid

Sub-Saharan Africa suffers from an acute energy crisis, with seventy per cent of the population lacking access to electricity. Low carbon, off-grid energy can address this faster and cheaper than high carbon options – alleviating poverty in the process. This approach also provides an important opportunity for British businesses, who are well placed to provide low carbon solutions and help Africa’s emergent green economy to grow.

This event is being run in partnership with Christian Aid, RSPB, Greenpeace and WWF.
