Greening the city regions: opportunities for new metro mayors
Six city regions elected new metro mayors in May 2017. They have strategic powers over wider geographic areas to encourage greater economic development and growth in a way that reflects local needs.
This new tier of power is a unique opportunity for green leadership. Metro mayors can tackle pressing environmental challenges, including cleaning up air and water pollution, developing cleaner local transport and creating networks of accessible wildlife rich habitats.
This report, produced jointly with the National Trust, The Wildlife Trusts, CPRE and the Campaign for Better Transport, sets out actions the new metro mayors can take to make their city regions greener, cleaner and more liveable. It includes the Green City Regions Index
showing each region’s current strengths and weaknesses on 17 environment indicators, from air quality to the natural environment and protection of heritage.
